Yes, direct connection (connection without a SkyController) is disabled by default, but can be enabled with a setting in FreeFlight. However, using the 4G link on the drone requires the use of the SkyController (+ a GroundSDK based application in current versions), as it contains the secure elements that handles authentication on our servers.
Yes, you can use either GroundSDK to create a mobile app, or use Olympe to create a python program. Either of those methods supports direct connections and connections through the SkyController.
